England 2–0 Iceland: Lionesses Maintain Perfect Start to World Cup Qualifying

England women’s national football team continued their strong start to the road to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a controlled 2–0 victory over Iceland women’s national football team at City Ground.

In front of a lively Nottingham crowd, goals from Lucy Bronze and Georgia Stanway secured another three points for the Lionesses, ensuring Sarina Wiegman’s side made it two wins from two in their Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Strong start from England

England started brightly and immediately took control of possession, pushing Iceland deep inside their own half. The Lionesses’ attacking trio of Lauren James, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo created several early openings as Iceland were forced to defend in numbers.

Despite England’s dominance, clear chances were initially hard to convert. Russo had an early effort comfortably saved, while Hemp went close after a dangerous cross into the box.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 22nd minute. From sustained pressure, Bronze rose highest inside the penalty area to power home a header and give England a deserved lead. The goal also marked a memorable personal moment for the experienced defender on her 145th international appearance.

Iceland remained disciplined defensively and nearly stunned the home crowd shortly after the hour mark. A rare attacking move resulted in a dangerous header from Sandra Jessen, but England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton produced an outstanding save to preserve the Lionesses’ lead.

The moment served as a reminder that despite England’s dominance, the result was still in the balance.

Stanway seals the win

England finally put the game beyond doubt in the 78th minute. A well-delivered cross from Bronze found Stanway arriving in space, and the midfielder struck a composed volley into the net to double England’s advantage.

The goal capped another energetic performance from the Bayern Munich midfielder and eased any late nerves as the Lionesses closed out the match comfortably.

Lionesses looking ahead

England finished the game with the vast majority of possession and a huge advantage in attempts on goal, underlining their control throughout the contest.

While the scoreline could have been even greater given the number of chances created, Wiegman will be pleased with the clean sheet and another confident display as her side continues its journey towards qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

With momentum building and key players returning to form, the Lionesses now look ahead to the next stage of their qualifying campaign with confidence.

Final Score:

England 2 – 0 Iceland

Bronze 22’, Stanway 78’
